My story begins in the suburbs of Metro Detroit. Lincoln Park, MI is a multicultural haven nestled on the outskirts of Detroit. As a child I loved to play outside (despite the temperamental and infamous MI weather) and could often be spotted with a book enveloping my face.
As my teen years approached I became fascinated with the idea of helping others especially through volunteerism. I continued to volunteer weekly throughout high school. It was during my senior year that I first heard the term “social work.” On my personality and career oriented tests I always was placed in the “social sciences” and “creative studies” categories. However, I shrugged off the notion of social sciences because research or being a counselor just didn’t jive with me. But social work? That sounds interesting! You mean I can get paid (well…sort of…) to be a professional helper, advocate, teacher, problem solver, etc.?
So when it came time to fill in the blank next to the category MAJOR: _____________ on my forms at Spring Arbor University hesitantly but instinctively I wrote “Social Work.” Four years and a bachelor’s degree later I am beginning a Masters of Social Work (MSW) degree at the world renowned University of Michigan.
Am I nervous? You betcha.
Do I feel too young to master an area of expertise? Yep.
Despite my nerves, anxiety, and bouts with doubt I am ready to embrace my last year of school (for a LONG time) and join in a growing and flourishing field of professionals dedicated to making the world a little more livable
